The group formed in the early 1980s riding the wave of euphoria and, above all, hope that accompanied the return to democracy in Argentina after seven years of military rule. Soda Stereo pushed the musical boundaries of Latin American rock paying homage to influences like the Police and the Talking Heads and their influence lives on in contemporary bands like Mana, Los de Abajo and Juanes.
The band comprising of vocalist Gustavo Cerati, bassist Zeta Bosio and drummer Charly Alberti separated after a final tour in September 1997 citing personal problems between one another and artistic differences, each musician continued with various individual projects with varying degrees of success. The band has stated that after the Me Veras Volver tour of 2007 they will each return to their own devices thus killing off any dreams of a reconciliation or new material. But, fans will be thrilled with another opportunity to see the trio who are the epitome and identity of Latin American rock.
So, almost ten years to the day and place where they bade a farewell to distraught fans at a full capacity crowd in the Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires they will return in October.
When news was indeed confirmed of the tour and tickets went on sale the first three dates at the Estadio River Plate were sold out in a just under three days leading to the band booking the venue for a further two days. Soda Stereo has the awesome fame of being the Argentine band to have filled and sold out the massive 80,000 capacity Estadio River Plate the most times.
Soda Stereo fans based around Latin America will be pleased to note that they too will have the opportunity to hear and see their idols singing seminal hits such as De Musica Ligera and Te Para Tres as the tour will include (confirmed) Chile, Mexico, Colombia Ecuador, Panama, Peru the US as well as Argentina.
